If you’ve recently lost a spouse or parent, you’ll know that grieving is an emotionally tumultuous path. Beyond the evident heartache, the toll it takes on your health can be profound. Quite often, we’re not even aware of how our health is becoming affected until the symptoms can no longer go ignored.
This article is intended to flag some common health issues that can surface when you’re grieving the loss of a parent or spouse. They may pop up within a couple of weeks or months after your loved one has passed, as your body attempts to cope with the loss. It’s crucial to recognize and address what these common health issues are and how they may emerge during this delicate time.
Hair Loss
Grief often triggers physical responses and hair loss is a common manifestation. The stress and emotional upheaval may lead to a condition known as telogen effluvium, causing increased hair shedding. Embracing self-care practices and seeking support can aid in alleviating this symptom. In most cases, hair does grow back with time and a lot of TLC.
Weight Loss or Gain
Changes in weight are prevalent responses to grief. Some individuals experience a loss of appetite, leading to weight loss, while others may turn to food for comfort, resulting in weight gain. Nourishing your body with balanced meals and seeking guidance from a healthcare professional can help maintain a healthy equilibrium. Friends and family can also help by preparing healthy, wholesome meals for you to ensure you’re getting adequate nourishment as you process your loss – just ask for some support.
Blood Pressure Fluctuations
The emotional intensity of grief can impact blood pressure, leading to fluctuations that may pose health risks Regular check-ups and daily stress management techniques like meditation, breathwork, and walks in nature can help with stabilizing blood pressure levels.
Insomnia
Sleep disturbances are a common companion to grief. Insomnia can exacerbate the emotional toll, creating a cycle that further impacts mental and physical health. Establishing a soothing bedtime routine, creating a restful sleep environment and seeking professional guidance are crucial steps in overcoming insomnia.
Immune System Suppression
Grieving can suppress the immune system, making the body more susceptible to illnesses. You could develop a cold or a bout of pneumonia or the flu, or a skin condition might surface. Prioritizing self-care, maintaining a balanced diet and incorporating immune-boosting activities such as light exercises, can help fortify your body’s defenses.
Digestive Issues
Grief-induced stress can contribute to digestive problems like indigestion, bloating or irritable bowl syndrome (IBS). Adopting mindful eating habits, eating fruits and vegetables from the colours of the rainbow, avoiding processed foods, staying hydrated, and seeking medical advice for persistent issues can aid in managing digestive health.
Mental Health Struggles
Beyond the physical manifestations, grief takes a toll on mental health. Anxiety, depression and overwhelming sadness are common. Seeking the support of a grief coach or therapist, engaging in support groups and practicing self-compassion are vital steps in nurturing your emotional well-being.
